USELESS UNTIL NEEDED A field guide to boring objects that save the day

About this site

The things that look useless, until they are not.

Last updated September 30, 2026

Useless Until Needed is an independent field guide to the boring objects that save the day: the tire inflator in the trunk, the water alarm in the basement, the radio that still works when the power and the cell towers do not. One object per page. Who it is for, who should skip it, what breaks, and where to buy it.

Who publishes it

Useless Until Needed is published by Drowning Hand, an independent media company in the United States. We are not owned by a retailer or a manufacturer, and no brand pays to appear on this site. Editorial decisions are made by the people who write the pages, and nobody else.

How we choose and review

Every page starts with a real failure we want to prevent: a dead battery in an empty parking lot, a basement that floods while you are away, a heat wave with the air conditioner down, a storm that takes the grid with it. Then we look for the object that solves it and hold it to five rules.

1. Evidence first. We read verified buyer reviews across the whole life of a listing, not just the first page, and we separate what owners report from what the maker claims. The maker's specifications and promises are labeled as the maker's on every page.

2. The downside comes first. We write the "what breaks" and "who should skip it" sections before we write anything positive. If an object has a known failure mode, it is on the page.

3. No prices. We never print a price. Prices move daily; the live price is always on the retailer's listing, one click away.

4. No pay to play. We do not run sponsored posts, we do not accept free units in exchange for coverage, and a commission never changes a verdict. An object that does not earn its place does not get a page.

5. Dated and corrected. Every page carries the date it was last modified. When something changes, including a recall, a discontinued model or a claim that turned out wrong, we fix the page and move the date.

How we make money

When you buy something through a link on this site, the retailer or brand may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing extra. The site participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and may join other affiliate programs over time. Our full policy is on the affiliate disclosure page.

Photos, video and illustrations

Product photos and video come from the makers and from real customers, as labeled on each page. The scene illustrations at the top of our pages are generated images of the situation the object is built for, and each page says so in its footer.

Corrections

If we got something wrong, tell us at sos@drowninghand.com. We read every message, we fix the page, and we update its date.
